Preventing Colds and Flu

naso pure systemNeti pot

I am a respiratory therapist by trade and cold and flu season is in full swing.  One of the best and easiest ways to keep from getting a cold or flu is to practice nasal washing.  It may sound a bit odd but it really works and it’s very easy to do.  You can either buy a neti pot which is washable and reausable or you can buy premade bottle systems.  Basically you place your tongue to the back of your throat, tilt your head sideways a little bit and pour in the saline solution into one nare or side of your nose.  It will run through your nasal passageway and come out the other side flushing out any germs and debris along with it.  When germs can’t stay put they can’t grow and make you sick.  This is also excellent for those who suffer from airborne allergies and sinus troubles.  You can buy premade saline solution packets to mix with water or you can make your own with 8 oz. distilled warm water a half teaspoon of salt.  Go to www.nasopure.com for more information.

This statement is in no way intended to take the place of your physicians advice, but is an excellent preventive measure you can easily perform at home.

I was telling my husband about these neti pipes and he looked at me and said, “Next thing I know you are going to be doing one of those yogi nasal floss tricks!” LOL…I said if it would prevent all of this nasty nasal and sinus junk sure will!! Gosh, just read your description above. Does it run down your throat? Could I use a 10cc syringe and get the same results? What about swimming pool water? LOVE your blog by the way and is that you with the neti pot above?

No that isn’t me with the neti pot. lol I listened to a lecture about nasal washing from a pediatrician. She has children as small as 2 and 3 doing this. It doesn’t run down your throat. When you place your tongue to the back of your throat, as you do when you are in the dentist chair and they are squirting water in your mouth, andyou tilt your head, the solution will run in on one side on your nose and out the other side freely. I would caution against using a syringe, you wouldn’t be able to control the pressure very well. The neti pot just uses gravity for force, the naso pure system you can squeeze the bottle a bit. I choose the neti pot over the plastic bottle personally, you just wash it after each use and reuse. You don’t want forceful water with a lot of pressure as I think that would hurt. Swimming pool water is going to be laden with chlorine and that will burn as well as not being good for you. Chlorine is very toxic and cancer causing. The salt and water solution closely mimics your bodies own natural water/sodium content so it should not burn when you use it.
Thanks for visiting my blog. It is really fun to do,.
